Elephants are social creatures with strong family bonds. Being a matriarchal society, it’s one of the older females who is the master of the herd. Members of the family consist of her offspring, sisters and their offspring. A family unit can be as small as 3 members to as large as 25 members or more. The elephant herds consist of closely related family units and may consist of up to 100 individuals. When the food and water is scarce and restricted to small areas, more than one herd may come together to form larger herds that may consist of a few hundred individuals.
This herd of elephants was recently seen on a safari to Corbett Tiger Reserve by Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalist Jeewan Rautela.
