A Tarai Grey Langur raises alarm for a Tiger

Corbett Tiger Reserve is home to the largest population of tigers for any protected area across the distribution range of the species. As per the last count there are more than 250 tigers in Corbett. The reason for such a good density of tigers in the reserve is the abundance of the prey base. Tiger’s prey base in Corbett includes Spotted Deer, Sambar, Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Blue Bull, Wild Boar, Rhesus Macaque, Tarai Grey Langur, Porcupine, Indian Peafowl and many other small creatures. As the prey base abundance increases, the territory size of the tigers shrinks, accommodating more individuals in the given area. The role of the tiger as a top predator and a keystone species is to regulate and maintain a healthy balance of prey species numbers in the ecosystem.
Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalist Abhishek Bhatt heard a tarai grey langur raising alarm. Following the calls of the langur, he found a tigress that was leisurely walking along the edge of a forested stream in a patch of jungle near Jim’s Jungle Retreat.
