One of the most ambitious conservation initiatives in the country, Project Tiger, completes 50 years today. Tiger could have gone extinct in the 1970s if it was not given the highest degree of protection under the umbrella of Project Tiger. Once abundant and estimated to be up to 40000 in numbers in the year 1900, Tiger numbers crashed down to less than 2000 individuals by the late 1960s. This was the result of rampant hunting, poaching and widespread destruction of Tiger’s habitat.
On 1st April 1973, Project Tiger was initiated at Dhikala in the heart of Corbett National Park. Today Corbett Tiger Reserve has the largest population of tigers for any reserve in the country, with over 250 breeding individuals.
At Jim’s Jungle Retreat, we celebrate the success of Corbett Tiger Reserve and wish this charismatic specie to continue ruling our forests.
