It is instinctive behavior of the prey animals to raise alarm when the presence of the predator is detected. Various kinds of deer, monkey, langur, jackal, peafowl, junglefowl and many varieties of other bird species voice alarm at the presence of the tiger. The deer may raise alarm when tiger is sighted or even when the deer can smell the predator. However, when the tiger has made a kill and the deer and other prey animals have seen this happen, often they ignore the presence of the tiger as they now know that the predator is well fed and that there is no immediate danger to them.
Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalist Jeewan Singh Rautela had recently photographed this tiger on a safari when it was walking past the spotted deer. The deer were not alarmed at the presence of the tiger as they had witnessed it making a wild boar kill the previous evening. The tiger was also not interested in the deer as all it wanted was to quench its thirst from a nearby stream.
