The Tricarinate Hill Turtle, scientifically known as Melanochelys tricarinata, is a unique species of turtle found in parts of India and Sri Lanka. This small to medium-sized turtle derives its name from the three distinct keels on its shell, which provide it with a striking appearance. Tricarinate Hill Turtles are primarily terrestrial and are commonly found in forested areas, preferring moist habitats such as streams and ponds. Unfortunately, habitat loss and illegal pet trade pose significant threats to their survival. Efforts are being made to conserve and protect this species, highlighting the importance of preserving their natural habitats and raising awareness about their ecological significance.
Monsoon is a good time to come across this beautiful creature in the jungles of Corbett Tiger Reserve. This Tricarinate Hill Turtle was recently photographed by Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalist on a safari to Corbett Tiger Reserve.
