The Red-rumped Swallow is a small passerine bird found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. It measures about 14-15 cm in length with a wingspan of 28-32 cm. This bird species is known for its vibrant plumage, characterized by a rusty-red rump, contrasting with a steel-blue upper body and a white underbelly. It has a deeply forked tail, which it often fans out during flight. Red-rumped Swallows are highly skilled aerial acrobats, darting and swooping through the air to catch insects on the wing. They are migratory birds, spending their winters in Africa and returning to breed in their northern range.
This Red-rumped Swallow fledgling was recorded being fed by its parents by Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalist Jeewan Rautela on a recent safari to Corbett Tiger Reserve.
