House Sparrow is one of the most common and familiar birds. It has spread across large parts of the world along with the spread of the human populations. The species benefits from the availability of its food in human habitations. In recent times, the House Sparrow populations have crashed across major parts of its distribution, especially from urban and suburban areas. It’s yet not clear what is causing this population decline but it’s speculated that this is due to mobile signals or due to excessive use of pesticides and insecticides in the crops.
Birds are indicators of the good health of the ecosystem. As their metabolism is extremely fast, anything that affects their diet affects them faster than other creatures. When we see a species decline in its habitat, this is an indication of the first signs of the habitat degradation.
World Sparrow Day is celebrated each year on 20th March to spread awareness about these delightful companions of Mankind and to protect and conserve them.
